Introduction: Brittan Allen

My name is Brittan Allen and I am a senior studying journalism in Gaylord College.  I am planning to graduate in May and I couldn't be more excited.  This is the only online course I am taking this semester though I have taken many in the past.  In addition to this course, I am also taking my senior capstone course which will be challenging.  Right now, I am an intern at Oklahoma Watch, a non-profit, investigative online newspaper, and I also work on campus as a student worker.  After graduation, I am joining News21 in Phoenix and reporting on the regulations of marijuana across the country.

Outside of school and work, I also have one cat and a dog.  My cat, Toby, is two years old and a handful to say the least.  Raley, my Australian Shepherd, is eight months old and again, a handful.  Aside from catering to my pets, I spend a lot of time in Tulsa which is where I'm from.  It is my favorite place to be and there really is no place like home.  I have also been a vegetarian for the last seven years and recently decided to go vegan so yay fruits and vegetables!

Eventually, I hope to travel a lot for both work and leisure.  With my profession, I think that's a definite possibility and I'm looking forward to it.  I have traveled some but I've only been out of the country once and that was to Mexico.  I was very young at the time so I don't remember much.  I hope to travel to Spain and New Zealand in the near future.  Inside the United States, Portland is on my list of next places to travel along with Seattle.  Since they're so close, I'm hoping to knock those out at the same time.

  1. Wow, this is the first time I have heard about Oklahoma Watch, Brittan - and I am really glad to learn about this!!! I subscribed to the blog. I am esp. interested in education reporting. Do you know about OKPolicy? That is the main place I have been following the education news for Oklahoma: OKPolicy.org. Their policy director, Gene Perry, took this class YEARS ago, back when I first started teaching at OU. He's a great guy, and I am so impressed at the work OKPolicy does. I will enjoy following Oklahoma Watch also, and I hope you have a great experience interning there! And moving on to Phoenix sounds FANTASTIC... Tucson was my favorite place that I lived when I was growing up (we moved around a lot). I bet you will enjoy Arizona a lot; it is a fascinating place! Later in the semester there's a reading unit on Native American legends of the Southwest... that might even be something you want to do your Storybook on, getting ready for your future state! :-)

  2. Brittan, I just saw this item in The Economist Twitter and thought I would share it with you! Size of Legal Cannabis Market ... fascinating stuff! When I was a kid I never thought we would be reading about legal marijuana in the Economist, that's for sure! :-)

  3. Your internship sounds really interesting. I hadn't heard of Oklahoma Watch before but I looked it up and it looks really neat. I also think what your plans are for after graduation are really interesting. Marijuana is a highly debated topic right now so it will be interesting to see what your reports cover. I'm from Muskogee so I know right where Tulsa is! I've been there many times. I certainly hope that you get to travel to the places you want to go. Traveling is a lot of fun and it's great to be able to experience new places.

  4. Congratulations on already landing a job for after graduation! I am also graduating in May and I have no earthly idea exactly where I'll be getting a job at. It also will be a very unique field to cover since so much is changing daily. It will definitely be neat to look back and say you were reporting on such a charged topic since it varies state by state. Hopefully I'll be able to see some of your work from it.

  5. Hey Brittan!

Like you, I am a vegetarian. I have been a vegetarian for 5 1/2 years. I am so impressed that you have decided to become a vegan. I think that is so cool! I do not think that I would be able to be a vegan. I like cheese and ice cream way too much.

I hope that you will be able to travel. New Zealand sounds like an amazing and beautiful place. I recently studied abroad. I studied abroad over the summer in Ireland. While, I was there I was also able to visit London and Belgium. I had the greatest time.

  6. Hi, Brittan! First off, congratulations on your upcoming graduation and the fact that you already have a job lined up! That can be really difficult to arrange in this day and age, so kudos to you.

Secondly, I also have a couple of dogs back home and know just what you mean by pet being a handful--a lovable handful, but a handful just the same.

Also, I am very impressed by your choice of diet; my sister is a vegetarian, and she often has enough issues finding food options when out and about, so I can only imagine how difficult it is for a vegan. But I truly respect both the moral and environmental rationales behind vegan and vegetarian diets, and the strength of will required to keep up with such lifestyles.

  7. Congrats on graduating soon! I hope I'm as lucky as you to have a job lined up after graduation! My cousin was a vegetarian and he just became vegan and he loves it! He says he's never felt better. He's tried convincing me to become vegan too haha but that is definitely not happening. I've heard New Zealand is such a pretty place!! I want to go so bad!

  8. Hey Brittan. That’s awesome that you already have a job lined up for after you graduate. Phoenix seems like it would be a great place to live, and reporting about marijuana laws sounds like an interesting topic. I love animals too, but all of my dogs and cats live in Tulsa with my parents and my brother. I also like to travel, and New Zealand looks like it would make for a great vacation spot.

  9. Hey there, fellow Tulsan! I was born and raised in Tulsa for about ½ of my life. Tulsa is also one of my favorite places since almost all of my family lives there still. Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! I'll also be graduating in May and will be getting out in the workforce. I won't be traveling for my job or anything, but I do love to travel. I also plan to visit Seattle someday to visit my one and only sibling who doesn't live in Tulsa. I have also visited a part of Mexico via a cruise ship. We went to Cozumel and the Grand Caymans. Well, like I said, it was nice to meet you & I look forward to reading more of your stories in the future.

  10. The job you have lined up after graduation sounds absolutely awesome! Having that already taken care of has to be such a relief! My best friend has two Australian shepherds and those dogs are a handful! It sounds like you have the perfect career lined up for all your traveling needs and desires. Your life seems to be tied up pretty neatly, I’m excited for you!

  11. I think it is really cool what you are doing for your internship currently, and for your job after school. I also used to have an Australian Shepherd and can vouch for you on how much a handful they can be. They are just a ball of energy. Traveling is also very great! It is hard to find someone that doesn’t like traveling.

  12. Yay for being a senior! I am also a senior within Gaylord College (public relations), so it's great to read from a fellow journalism student. Congrats on joining News21; I've heard great things about it from people who joined recently, so I think you'll really enjoy it! I've been a vegetarian for about four or five years, but I think it would be too difficult for me to go vegan. I hope you're liking it though. And I hope you to get to travel a lot, especially New Zealand. That would be an awesome trip!

  13. Congratulations on being so close to graduating and having a job lined up for afterwards! It must be nice to know what you will be doing once you step out into the real world. It also sounds like you will have a very interesting and exciting job. I hope you do get to travel! I have been lucky enough to visit a few different countries and want to travel as much as possible. I have two cats here in Norman, and four dogs and a cat back at my mom's in Texas, so I definitely understand how crazy animals can be!

  14. Hi Brittan! We actually have a lot in common. I'm also a Gaylord student but majoring in Advertising, I will also graduate in May. I wish I had a job lined up like you but I am currently still on the hunt! I'm from OKC, so pretty close but I also like to go home a lot too. Tulsa is another one of my favorite places in OK, its a great city. Portland is high on my travel list, hopefully we will both get the chance to go soon! Finally I gave up meat for lent so I'm also currently a vegetarian. it's something I've toyed with for a while, so maybe it will stick longer than just 40 days. Glad I stopped by, good luck with the rest of the seamster!

  15. Brittan, That is awesome you already have a job lined up for after graduation! I bet it is a relief to have that weight off of your shoulders and focus on getting through the semester! That is also great you are a vegan! I was pescetarian for about two years but had to stop due to health concerns. But I know being vegan can certainly have it's challenges for congrats on being able to keep it up!

  16. I love to travel too, although I have not had the opportunity to go to very many places and I have never been able to go outside the US. It is definitely on my bucket list though, I just haven't narrowed down exactly where I want to visit. That is awesome that you have a job for after graduation. That is exciting to be able to get to work right after graduating. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  17. Hey! Sounds like you have a pretty exciting life! I think it's super cool that you're moving to Phoenix after graduation, and getting to work with such a hot issue right now. I may or may not be moving to Tucson, so yay Arizona! I hope you get the opportunity to travel because it's seriously the best! If I could travel for the rest of my life, I would!

  18. Hi Brittan- I too am graduating in May, so very exciting. Luckily I took my capstone last semester. It’s great that you already have a job lined up after graduation. That’s one less thing to be stressed out about. I never really have thought about New Zealand as a place I’d like to travel but it is really a beautiful place. Good luck!

  19. Hi Brittan it is nice to meet you. I had a few friends that have been to New Zealand and they say it is an amazing place to visit. Well it was great to meet you...Good luck on the rest of the sememster.

  20. I am also a Gaylord student. I feel like I spend most of my life in the upstairs lab. That is a really cool assignment you have after graduation. That sound like it will be super interesting. I am also a vegetarian! I made the switch about six years ago and love it. I certainly admire your switch to vegan. Your cat and puppy sound adorable! I'm a huge animal person, all shapes and sizes!

  21. Hi, Brittan! I also have a cat, named Sweetie, but she is very laid-back and low-maintenance. It's so cool that you already have a job lined up for after you graduate. It's about 2 months til graduation and I'm still not positive what I'll be doing afterwards. I've applied to graduate programs, but I'm also considering taking a year off before entering a program. I also like to travel and hope to do more in the future, and I hope you get to see many interesting places thanks to your job.

  22. Hey, Brittan! Congrats on being so close to graduation! I think it's so neat that you are an intern at Oklahoma Watch. I haven't heard too much about it, but it sounds like a great place to get experience. I'm going to have to check out the newspaper sometime! Also, major props to you for being a vegetarian! I tried it once and liked it but lacked the discipline to stick with it. However, that was a long time ago, so I might give it another go one of these days. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

It is also super cool that you want to help regulate the marijuana across the country! You seem like a motivated person, which is something we need more in the world! 28. Hey Brittan, congratulations on graduating in May. I am too! I am very surprised that I have not had the chance to view your blog until this week. I really like the design that you have chosen and the color scheme. I have never heard of Oklahoma Watch. How is the crime in Norman? I have heard that Norman has a lot of domestic violence calls. I am glad that you have plans for after a graduation. Good luck!
